It was very early this morning. Probably around 3am that the Lord put this question in my heart, is it scriptural to plead the blood of Jesus over a person or situation.

Some of you may not have ever heard this phrase used before outside of Church but in my lifetime growing up and till now it is common to hear someone say in pray: We plead the blood of Jesus over this person’s life, or situation, or family. Whatever it is that needs protection, healing or deliverance.

I think it is importance to understand the Christian Vocabulary many believers use daily can become powerless if not spoken in family applied to a given situation. It can also be a barrier to fellowship with new believers if not translated or explained so that it is profitable for all.

As a biblical principle for the importance of understanding and edification in a congregation we can look to Paul’s instruction to the Church at Corinth regarding using the give of “Tongues” and “Prophecy” in the church service setting.

1 Corinthians 14:1-19

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

***I encourage you to go home and study the rest of this chapter 14 as Paul takes extra time to really be clear as to the best way to use the spiritual gifts in the Church service setting.

***The first point of the Message this morning: God desire is for our words and actions lift up Jesus and edify those around us.

*** Many times we quote scripture as a phrase with response to a situation or conversation and overtime it becomes removed in peoples minds from the original intent or rather is not expanded to apply to a broader principle or intent. As an example in the first point of the message today I use the phrase “Lift Up Jesus”, this immediately brings to my mind a scripture from John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

This scripture is very powerful and has multiple meanings and application as we will see in context.

John 12:23-36

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

Now I want to go back and talk about the question the Lord put in my heart this morning: Is it scriptural to “Plead the Blood of Jesus” over a life, situation, ect?

I did some research this morning and found the following explanation online from Kenneth Haggin Ministries in an article published in 2020:

The phrase "to plead the blood of Jesus" originates from the Pentecostal and Word of Faith traditions, which emerged in the early 20th century. It refers to an act of declaring faith in the redemptive work of Christ's sacrifice, akin to applying the Old Testament Passover blood to invoke divine protection. While the specific phrase isn't found in the Bible, the concept is rooted in Revelation 12:11, which says believers triumph over Satan by the blood of the Lamb and their testimony. 

***Before we dive to deep into this I want to spend some time talking about Blood. You see Blood is natural only because we all have it and every creature that God created has it but Blood is really supernatural and in God’s eyes it is very special.

As I was meditating on the message this morning the Lord brought to my mind some of the scriptures regarding Blood in the bible that help us to understand its powerful significance and importance to God.

The very first time we see the word for Blood in the bible is after Cain has committed the first murder and killed his brother Able. God is speaking with Cain about what he did and look at Gen 4:10 and see what God says about Ables blood:

   Gen 4:10

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

      3. to make outcry, clamour
    2. (Niphal) to be summoned
    3. (Piel) to cry aloud (in grief)
    4. (Hiphil) to call together

***blood has a voice and blood can speak, God can hear the blood when it speaks.

The next time we hear God speaking about Blood is in Genesis Chapter 9. This is after Noah and his family have come down out of the Ark and God is giving them new rules to follow regarding their responsibility for stewardship of the post flooded world and their relationship with the animals.

 Genesis 9:1-11

King James Version

And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.

Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.

But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.

Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,

And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

10 And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

Point #2 of the message today: God created you like himself and gave your blood life and voice.

Look at it again: Genesis 4:10 God says Able’s blood is crying out to God from the ground. Genesis 9:4-6 God says the life is in the blood, and God requires blood from those who shed blood because man is made in the image of God.

***I want to take you now to the place in scripture where God introduces this principle of physically applying blood from a sacrifice for protection.  

Exodus 12:1-13

And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,

This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:

And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.

John 1:26-32

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

** Point #4, Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world

Hebrews 9:18-28

King James Version

18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

***Point #5: The Blood of Jesus saves us, heals us, protects us and we can apply it by faith to our lives.

Ephesians 1:3-10

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

*** In closing I want to read some scriptures to you about Jesus, the Lamb of God from the book of Revelation:

Revelation 12:7-12

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Revelation 5

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

In Luke 2:22 we read How Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple and presented him to God in accordance to the Law of God given by Moses

22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

**God word tells us he knows us before we are even conceived***

Jeremiah 1:5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

**Gods work tells us Children are a Blessing and a Heritage from the Lord.***

Psalm 127:3-5

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

**God’s word tells us Jesus cares about Children.***

Mark 10:13-16

And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

**God’s word gives us a promise of peace with our Children***

Isaiah 54:13 13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord,
And great shall be the peace of your children.

Proverbs 22:6  Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it
